# Create a database from chat

> Ask an AI assistant connected to Raff for a database and get a working connection string, free or paid.

Updated October 11, 2026

With Raff connected, one sentence gets you a running database. The assistant creates it, waits until it accepts connections and hands you the connection string, usually within 30 seconds. A free PostgreSQL needs nothing else; a paid plan shows its price first.

## Before you start

* Raff connected to your AI app: [Claude](/products/ai/mcp/quickstart-guides/connect-claude), [Claude Code](/products/ai/mcp/quickstart-guides/connect-claude-code), [ChatGPT](/products/ai/mcp/quickstart-guides/connect-chatgpt), [Cursor](/products/ai/mcp/quickstart-guides/connect-cursor) or [another app](/products/ai/mcp/quickstart-guides/connect-other-clients).
* For a paid plan, a card in **Billing** in the Raff dashboard.

## A free database

<Steps>
  <Step title="Ask for it">
    *"Create a free Postgres database called notes-app."*

    Each account has one free database. It has a public address over TLS so you can connect from anywhere.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Get the connection string">
    The assistant answers with the database and its connection string:

    ```
    postgresql://raffadmin:PASSWORD@abc12345.public.db.raffusercloud.com:5432/defaultdb?sslmode=require
    ```

    The address works the moment you get it: the assistant only hands it over once the database accepts connections.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Use it">
    Ask the assistant to create your tables, or paste the string into your app's `DATABASE_URL`.
  </Step>
</Steps>

## A paid database

<Steps>
  <Step title="Ask for a plan">
    *"Create a Postgres database with 2 vCPU and 4 GB RAM for production."*

    The assistant finds the plan and gets a quote. Nothing is created yet.
  </Step>

  <Step title="Read the quote">
    The quote shows what you get, the monthly price and the card it is charged to, for example *PostgreSQL 2 vCPU, 4 GB RAM, 80 GB storage: \$45.99 a month, Visa ending in 4242*. In Claude it appears as an order card.

    </Frame>
  </Step>

  <Step title="Confirm">
    Say yes, or click **Confirm** on the order card. The database is created as a monthly subscription; the first month is charged within seconds, from your account balance first and then the card.
  </Step>
</Steps>

No card saved? The quote says so and links to **Billing**. Add a card there and ask again.

## Other engines and options

| Ask | Creates |
| - | - |
| *"a free MySQL database"* | MySQL, free plan |
| *"a Valkey cache"* | Valkey that drops the least recently used keys when full (`valkey_mode: cache`) |
| *"a Postgres database with pgvector"* | PostgreSQL with the `vector` extension on |
| *"a private Postgres database"* | No public address; reach it from a VPC |
| *"Postgres 16"* | That version instead of the newest |

## Verify

*"Show me my Raff databases"* lists the new database as running. It also appears under **Databases** in the Raff dashboard.
