# Managed Databases troubleshooting

> Common issues with Raff managed databases and how to fix them.

Updated October 11, 2026

Issues you may run into with managed databases, and how to resolve them. If your problem is not listed, contact [support](mailto:support@rafftechnologies.com).

## Common issues

<AccordionGroup>
<Accordion title="I cannot connect from my laptop">
**What's happening:** the database has no public address, or your address is not allowed.

**Fix:**

1. In **Access**, turn **Public access** on. See [Turn on public access](/products/store/databases/quickstart-guides/turn-on-public-access).
2. If **Allowed from** has entries, add your address with **Add my IP** and **Save addresses**.
3. Copy the string from **Connect** with **The internet** selected; private hostnames (without `.public.`) only work inside the VPC.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title=""tlsv1 unrecognized name" or "port 5432/6543 needs TLS"">
**What's happening:** on the public ports 5432 and 6543, PostgreSQL finds your database by the hostname your client sends over TLS. Your client connected without TLS, or did not send the hostname.

**Fix:** use `sslmode=require` and the full hostname. If the client is too old to send it, connect to the database's own public port, shown in **Access**.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="My client rejects the certificate">
**What's happening:** each database has its own certificate authority, which your computer does not trust by default.

**Fix:** download the CA on the **Connect** tab and point your client at it (`sslmode=verify-full&sslrootcert=ca.crt`), or use `sslmode=require`, which encrypts without the check. Inside a VPC use `sslmode=require`: the private hostname is not in the certificate.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Too many connections">
**What's happening:** the plan's connection limit is reached.

**Fix:** on PostgreSQL, connect apps to the pooler (port 6543 public, 6432 private) instead of the direct port. Close idle connections in your app's pool settings. If you still need more, move to a bigger plan. See [Plans and sizing](/products/store/databases/concepts/plans-and-sizing).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Writes fail with "read-only transaction"">
**What's happening:** storage reached 95% of the plan, so PostgreSQL or MySQL switched to read-only to protect the data. The **Monitoring** tab shows **Read-only**.

**Fix:** grow storage in **Settings** (no downtime), or delete data. On PostgreSQL, run `SET default_transaction_read_only = off;` in your session first, then `DROP` or `TRUNCATE` what you do not need. Writes work again once usage is below 90%.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="My free database is Paused">
**What's happening:** free databases pause after 7 days without connections. The data is kept.

**Fix:** click **Resume** on the database's page. It is back in about a minute with the same address and password.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="The database shows Down or Degraded">
**What's happening:** it is not answering, or part of it is not working. The **Overview** tab shows the cause; Raff is alerted and emails you when it is back.

**Fix:** if the cause is **storage is full**, grow storage. Otherwise, wait for the recovery email, or contact support with the database ID.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Slow queries are empty on PostgreSQL">
**What's happening:** query statistics come from `pg_stat_statements`, which is off until you turn it on.

**Fix:** **Settings**, **Extensions**, tick `pg_stat_statements`. Statistics appear as queries run.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="Prisma or another driver fails on the pooled address">
**What's happening:** the pooler runs in transaction mode, which does not keep session state or session prepared statements.

**Fix:** for Prisma add `pgbouncer=true` to the pooled URL, and use the direct port 5432 for migrations (`directUrl`). See [Connection pooling](/products/store/databases/concepts/connection-pooling).
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="I cannot create a free database">
**What's happening:** each account has one free database, any engine, and it is in use.

**Fix:** use it, upgrade it to a paid plan, or delete it to create another.
</Accordion>

<Accordion title="A paid database asks for a card">
**What's happening:** monthly databases are subscriptions and need a card that can be charged automatically.

**Fix:** add a card in **Billing**, then create the database again.
</Accordion>
