Common issues

What’s happening: each install command works once, for 15 minutes.Fix: on the server’s Guardian tab, click Install Raff Guardian again and run the new command within 15 minutes. Keep the dialog open until the install has finished.
What’s happening: the installer stops before it changes anything when a step fails. The message says which:
What’s happening: Raff has not received the first report yet.Fix:
  1. Check the end of the PowerShell output: it lists the RaffGuardian service and its status. Running means the install worked; the tab updates within a minute or two.
  2. If PowerShell showed an error, see the issue above.
  3. Check that the server can reach api.rafftechnologies.com over HTTPS.
What’s happening: Raff has not had a report for over 5 minutes. The notice reads “Raff Guardian is not reporting.” Until it reports, it cannot block attackers or act on findings. Server is off is different: the server was turned off. Why: the server is busy, restarting or offline, outbound HTTPS is blocked, or the RaffGuardian service was stopped.Fix:
  1. Check the server is running and you can connect to it.
  2. On the server, run Get-Service RaffGuardian in PowerShell. If it is not Running, run Start-Service RaffGuardian as administrator.
  3. Check outbound HTTPS to api.rafftechnologies.com.
  4. If it still does not report, open the ⋯ menu on the Raff Guardian card and click Reinstall Raff Guardian, then run the new command. A reinstall keeps the server’s mode and settings.
What’s happening: something stops the change. The disabled button or the Queue says what. The common reasons:
  • Watch only: “Raff Guardian is set to Watch only on this server, so it changes nothing.” Choose another mode. See Set permissions: what it may do.
  • The action is Off: for example “Installing Windows updates is off in Raff Guardian’s settings. Set it to Auto or Ask me first.”
  • The action is Ask me: the change waits in the Queue for Approve. See Approve or decline a change.
  • A daily limit: a service is restarted automatically up to 3 times a day, then Raff Guardian asks; disk space is freed at most once a day per drive.
  • A core Windows service: “Windows needs this service, so Raff Guardian does not restart it.”
  • An older Raff Guardian: “This server runs an older Raff Guardian that cannot do this yet.” Raff Guardian updates itself; to get it at once, reinstall it.
  • Not reporting: see the issue above.
Fix: check, in this order:
  1. Mode and setting: on Watch only, or with Install Windows updates on your schedule on Off, Raff Guardian only reports updates. On Ask me, the install waits in the Queue.
  2. The window: on Updates, When Raff Guardian installs updates shows the days, time zone and the next run. Raff Guardian starts within an hour of the start time, and not within 20 hours of the last install.
  3. The snapshot: Activity may say “Not installed today: Raff Guardian could not take a snapshot first.” Nothing installs without protection. Check the server’s Snapshots tab and storage, then use Install now.
  4. Held back: updates with a known issue wait under Held back until their fix is installed. Driver updates are left to you.
  5. Nothing waiting: “Nothing to install: Windows reports no pending updates.”
If the server did not come back healthy after an install, see the next issue.
What’s happening: after an update install or restart, the server did not report again with Remote Desktop running within 25 minutes.Fix:
  1. Open the server’s console and check whether Windows is still installing updates or stuck at start-up.
  2. If the server is broken, approve Restore the pre-update snapshot in the Queue. The server goes back to its disk from just before the updates; anything written since is lost.
  3. If the server is fine, click Not now on the restore. The finding closes.
What’s happening: too many failed sign-ins came from your address within 15 minutes, for example from a saved password that changed.Fix:
  1. Connect through the browser console if Remote Desktop is blocked for you. See Open the browser console.
  2. On Security, Blocked addresses, click Unblock on your address.
  3. To stop it happening again, add your address in Who can reach Remote Desktop with A list of addresses. Allowed addresses are never blocked.
  4. Update the saved password that keeps failing, or raise Block an attacker after in Settings.
What’s happening: your current address is not on the allow list, for example because it changed.Fix: on Security, Who can reach Remote Desktop, choose Only my address or add your address to the list. The browser console always works, whatever you choose.
What’s happening: blocking is on, but the agent cannot watch the failed sign-ins on the server. The notice shows Windows’ reason when there is one.Fix: check that the RaffGuardian service is running (Get-Service RaffGuardian) and wait for the next report. If the notice stays, contact support with its text.
What’s happening: Raff Guardian removes its service and its two folders, and gives back Windows’ account lockout. It leaves your Windows Firewall rules and snapshots as they are.Fix:
  • Blocked addresses: in Windows Defender Firewall with Advanced Security, Inbound Rules, delete the rules named “Raff Guardian: block” followed by an address. Or run, as administrator: Get-NetFirewallRule -Name 'RaffGuardian-Block-*' | Remove-NetFirewallRule
  • Remote Desktop allow list: in the same window, open each Remote Desktop inbound rule, Scope, and set Remote IP address to Any IP address.
  • Snapshots: delete leftover guardian-pre-update- snapshots from the server’s Snapshots tab if you no longer need them.
  • The service is still there: the server was off or not reporting when you uninstalled. Raff Guardian removes itself at its next report. If the server can no longer reach Raff, remove it by hand as administrator: Stop-Service RaffGuardian, then sc.exe delete RaffGuardian, then delete C:\Program Files\Raff\Guardian and C:\ProgramData\Raff\Guardian. Removing it by hand does not give Windows its account lockout back: set it again under Local Security Policy, Account Lockout Policy.
What’s happening: every new Windows password sends a security email to the project’s members. When Raff cannot send it, nothing changes.Fix: try again in a minute.
What’s happening: “Your server did not answer within 2 minutes. It may be busy or restarting.” Or the card says questions are off, or that Raff Guardian has not heard from the server.Fix: try again once the server is reporting. If the card says “Questions are off for this server.”, click Turn on in Settings. Each server takes up to 10 questions a minute.
